Become a Friend of the Community Maternity Hubs!

Logan  mothers  and  babies  need  access  to  maternity   care  options  that  suit  them.

Currently  around  1  in  10  Logan  women  have  little   or  no  contact  with  healthcare  or  appropriate   support  services  during  their  pregnancy  – about   double  the  average  for  Queensland.

We  know  there  is  a  better  way!  A  way  that  will  support   these  families  to  have  access  to  a  care  model  that  best   suits  their  individual needs  and  provides  a  safe,   supportive  and  nurturing  start  to  life  together.

We  pledge  to  support  the  proposal  made  by  the   collaboration  between  Logan  Together,  Metro  South   Health,  and  over  twenty  consumer, community  and   health  organisations.

Community Maternity Hubs would provide:

  • A  continuous  relationship  with  a  primary  midwife  from  the  first  antenatal  visit,  right   through  labour,  birth  and  post-natal  care.
  • Additional  care  from  other  health  service  providers  based  upon  the  individual   needs  of  the  woman  and  her  family  (e.g. Aboriginal and  Torres  Strait  Islander  and  Maori   and  Pacific  Islander  health  workers.  GPs,  obstetricians,  allied  health  and  child  health nurses).
  • A  welcoming  community  or  neighbourhood  centre  setting  for  appointments.
  • Connection  to  other  community  supports  and  social  activities.
  • Ongoing  Oversight  Committee  with  guaranteed  community  voices,  which  ensures  that   agreed  vision  and  philosophy  of  this  care model  remains  integral  on  all  levels  to  ensure   positive  growth,  accountability  and  continuous  improvement  of  services.

We  know  that  these  hubs  will  only  succeed  with  the  ongoing  support  of  us  as  community  members.

I believe women are the unity of love and support for their family, and to support these traits maternity services for women needs to improve. I promote and support a continuous relationship with a primary midwife for the following factors and evidence it benefits all women. From antenatal midwives educate on good nutrition and positive body image, build women ’s mindset for labour and nurture/guide/care throughout up to 6 weeks postnatal care. The evidence is the reduction of interventions, having a known midwife during labouring and women having a model they can choose that is safe and opted for their own satisfaction. These factors could further assist women transitioning into motherhood and increase the wellbeing for her and the baby/babies she cares for throughout their future.

I pledge to be a friend Community Maternity Hub….

To stay connected and be informed with the progress and support the sustainability of these hubs in the future.

As a community we need to focus on nurturing and supporting pregnant and birthing women so they may enter the challenge of motherhood with a foundation of love and connection. Feeling confident, supported and cared for is essential. Every mother and every baby deserve the very best of care as they begin life together.

Women deserve the right to have access to a continuity of carer model. Research, loud and clear, states women and babies have significantly better outcomes with this model of care. Additionally, women in the Logan community often identify in minority and disadvantaged groups – hubs such as these are known to promote engagement and benefit health for all. Step up Logan and provide women and the community with excellent care surrounding pregnancy.
