We Stand With Muslim Community

We Stand With Muslim Community

Statement by Vivienne Doogan, (President, Together Union), Rev Brian Hoole (Bremer Brisbane Presbytery Minister, Uniting Church).

Friday 15th March 2019.

As Co-Chairs of the Queensland Community Alliance we condemn the terrorist attacks today in Christchurch.

Our Alliance brings together 30 member organisations that represent 1.6 million Queenslanders.  We are faith groups, unions, community organisations and ethnic associations.

Together we stand in solidarity with the Muslim community, both in New Zealand and here in Queensland.

Our first thoughts are with the victims and their families.

Some of us send prayers, others our thoughts.  But we are united in our concern and we are all prepared to act.

We do not want to live in a Queensland where people are scared to join with their community or practice their faith.

Now is a moment for civil society to step up.  We need to match the darkness of the attackers with the positiveness of our action.

We have spoken today to leaders of Islamic Council of Qld and Islamic Shia Council of Qld and offered our support.

We urge all people of good will in Qld to support the Muslim community and act for a welcoming Australia.
