Human Rights Day: A Portable Accessible Bathroom for Our Region
Join us for Human Rights Day Afternoon Tea where we will be discussing portable accessible bathrooms and planning one for our region!
Disability rights are human rights!
Our Gladstone Region has a huge range of community events, activities, sports events and cultural activities that some people with a disability are unable to access as they need a "Changing Places" accessible bathroom.
“Changing Places” facilities are larger than standard accessible toilets and have extra features and more space to meet the needs of people with disability and their carers. A Changing Places toilet facility allows people with high support needs to take part in all elements of community life, without having to limit their time out due to concerns about being able to access a suitable toilet.
Changing Places facilities include:
- a height-adjustable adult-sized change table
- a constant-charging ceiling track hoist system
- a centrally-located peninsula toilet
- more circulation space than standard accessible toilets
- an automatic door with a clear opening of 950mm at minimum a privacy screen
“This is definitely needed in the community. Before my surgery, I isolated myself for years not being able to attend events and functions. I couldn’t attend events with my children or grandkids because if I had an accident there was an immediate need to go home. So I just didn't go. If you have an accident when you are out, people can see it or smell it, you feel excluded from society.”- Carmen Jen, Gladstone Disability Community Network.
“I believe that being able to access a bathroom with safety and dignity is one of the most fundamental of human rights. The Gladstone region does community events really well but, sadly, many people with disability and their families are denied participation. This facility would change the lives of many people. It would also have a flow-on benefit for the wider community.”- Kate Dufty, Chairperson of Gladstone Disability Community Network.
Come along to learn more about this important effort and be a part of winning this for our community!
